There are a lot of great personal security tools and devices out there - here are some of our favorites. It's important you pick one or more that works for you and you know how to use them.

The best Personal Safety Tools are those you always have with you:

We are not big fans of weapons like pepper spray or other tools that could potentially be used against you. Any safety tool should be something you train with and know how to use even under extreme duress and in a variety of conditions. The reality is that it is incredibly difficult when you only have seconds to act to properly and effectively use a weapon. We favor safety devices and tools that give you time to run, or draw attention to you and act as a deterrent.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch offers a variety of great safety features, including the Emergency Alert feature (press and hold side button - slider will appear but if you just continue to hold a countdown will begin and an alert will sound) and the Find My Device locator feature. We encourage everyone to share their location with at least one loved one and communicate frequently about your plans so there is someone paying attention to your comings and goings in the event you do not arrive at your intended destination when expected.

Whistle

One of our favorite safety tools is a regular whistle. We keep them right on our keychain. They are inexpensive and can be carried in your mouth at times you feel unsafe and used at the earliest possible moment to draw attention to you. We also use them as extra awareness boosters in busy crosswalks. Don't be afraid to put your lips together and blow.

Birdie

This is our favorite personal alarm. Made for women, by women, it is easy to use, lightweight, can attach to your keychain and emits a high-pitched alarm and flashing lights. If you have to use it, just pull and throw and run!

AirTags

This is a simple and powerful way to let your loved ones know where you are. We carry one in our bra when running, make our teenagers keep one in their bra on nights out and have one in our purse.

Tactical Flashlight

This is another underrated safety tool. A small tactical flashlight, carried in your purse and shone into the eyes of a potential attacker can momentarily blind and allow you time to run away. Note a tactical flashilight needs to be at least 300 lumens and narrow beam to be effective.
