FOR ADULTS
Resources & Workshops
The phrases Personal Safety and Self-Defense mean different things to different people, just like "healthy lifestyle" means differently for different people.
Personal Safety is a Responsibility, it is YOUR responsibility
It is a habit of behavior that puts safety first. We like to equate it with exercise or sleep - we all know what we *should* do for exercise or to have better sleep habits, but we don't always do it. We encourage everyone to develop safety habits that are like brushing your teeth - so automatic and regular that when you don't do it, you feel weird.
The Four Pillars of Safety
Awareness is about habits that help increase your situational awareness
AWARENESS
Avoidance means taking steps to avoid situations that might be potentially dangerous
AVOIDANCE
Adrenaline is about how to manage your inevitable spike in the event you feel unsafe
ADRENALINE
Advocacy is about speaking up - in the moment and in your community
ADVOCACY
This is it: the two biggest habits you can do TODAY to improve your personal safety.
You know it. Everyone knows. Do all you can to make it a hard and fast habit.
-
No phone use
-
No headphones
This falls into the category of information we all know but that is hard to do all the time. And this is where those trade-offs we mentioned come into play. People like to listen to music and podcasts on commutes, just know those are behaviors you do that decrease your ability to be fully aware of your surroundings and increase the likelihood of you being the victim of an attack. Travel time is not relaxing time, although it can be, and it's not productive time. It's safety time.
The Everyday Safety team offers a series of safety talks for both parents and kids.
